On the op-ed page of the New York Times, the hijinks just won’t stop. The execrable Sarah Vowell continues to make us look back on the work of the execrable Maureen Dowd with something approaching nostalgia. Today she’s decided to reach out to Middle America with a display of Blue-State Values:
[At the Texas [...]

malaise (n.): a vague sense of mental or moral ill-being
A “malaise” seems to have infected the op-ed page of the New York Times, as the editors continue to punish us for having complained about Maureen Dowd. It looks, alarmingly, like the execrable Sarah Vowell is going to continue filling in for the execrable [...]

There was a companion piece to the WND scare-piece I discussed yesterday, in which WND CEO Joseph Farah made things more clear:
No one, of course, should be surprised that Osama bin Laden would devise such a mass-murdering plot. But what is truly shocking is the cavalier attitude of U.S. officials, who, fully knowing thousands of [...]

America’s worst nightmare is coming true, according to WorldNetDaily. The article’s title states it as a matter of simple fact:
Al-Qaida nukes already in U.S.; Terrorists, bombs smuggled across Mexico border by MS-13 gangsters
The article is really sort of an “article,” though: it turns out to be partly a semi-veiled advertisement for a new [...]

Kevin Drum has responded to the Chronicle article “Bloggers Need Not Apply,” which I discussed a couple of days ago. He concurs with the point I made, that, while it’s disconcerting to imagine academics losing out on job opportunities because of their weblogs, it’s really something to think about for non-academics. Here are [...]

A post at Language Log discusses what seems to be an urban legend about “Al-Qaeda.” Former British foreign secretary Robin Cook writes:
Al-Qaida, literally “the database”, was originally the computer file of the thousands of mujahideen who were recruited and trained with help from the CIA to defeat the Russians.
This is simply false, even though [...]

The information I found at Jabal al-Lughat (see earlier post) fascinated me to the point that I decided to have a crack at my own translation of the statement. My Arabic is so scanty that I don’t pretend to have anything of genuine value to add to the discussion, but this is some [...]

Jabal al-Lughat has some interesting things to say about the statement issued by the group claiming responsibility for the London terror attacks. The group, which calls itself Qa’idat al-Jihad in Europe, posted a statement that uses some interesting language:
The first interesting thing about this statement is the bizarre phrasing of its opening: والصلاة والسلام [...]

Kevin Drum tried the new Diet Coke Sweetened With Splenda (that’s the official name) and says he liked it. Being a serious devotee of Diet Coke, I tried it as soon as I saw it, in a gas station just north of the Mason-Dixon Line, while I was driving to Pittsburgh over the [...]

Bob Somerby said it on July 2nd about a different guest columnist, and now I’m saying it too: we’re being punished for having complained in the past about the execrable Maureen Dowd. You think Maureen’s bad? say the editors. We’ll show you bad.
This column, another fill-in while Maureen’s on book leave, is [...]
