More on the judge

Posted: Thursday, October 20th, 2005 @ 6:16 pm in Misc | 1 Comment »

According to an article in Tuesday’s Post, the judge I called an “asshole” has explained his bizarre decision to lift the protective order: he says it was all a big mistake, blaming it on a “clerical error.”
Prince George’s County Judge Richard A. Palumbo, facing criticism for dismissing a protective order against a man who [...]

The War on Christmas

John Gibson

Christ (the reason for the season)

Santa (a right jolly old elf)

Nasty left-wingers like me, we’re anti-Christmas, and we’ve got a conspiracy to subvert Christmas, that most sacred holiday.
That is the gravamen of a new “book” by Fox News star John Gibson.
Yes, Virginia, there is a war on Christmas. It’s the secularization of America’s favorite [...]

You Can’t Drive 55

A reporter from the San Francisco Chronicle decided to see if he could get better gas mileage out of a 2001 Chevy Malibu at 55 mph than at the normal rate of speed on the highway:
Traffic was a bit light when The Chronicle decided to take a 2001 Chevrolet Malibu for a 200-mile spin from [...]

Of interest to manufacturers

Commenter “RP,” a personal friend of mine, sent me a link to an essay entitled “Miers and Roberts: A CEO’s Dream Team.” I recommend that you all have a look at it:
For those trying to make sense of President Bush’s decision to nominate Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court, here’s a question: What [...]

Wingnuttery on loan from God

Good old Mark Noonan was all over himself with dire predictions of the “MSM” getting ready to “bury the story of the Iraq vote in the back pages.” That didn’t happen, but so what? Wacky Rush just went on ahead and pretended like that was what happened anyway!
Rush:
It — this is — this [...]

Maltese

Yesterday I mentioned the Maltese language. If you’re interested, here is some more information about Maltese, and a sample (thanks to Versteegh’s The Arabic Language (2001), a very handy and readable reference work).
The Ethnologue reports that there were some 300,000 speakers of Maltese in 1975. The Wikipedia entry says there are 400,000. [...]

More on proficiency, and Arabic

Yesterday I wrote about foreign-language “proficiency.” Today, there’s an article in the Washington Post “Outlook” section about the United States’ shortage of proficient Arabic-speakers. This is a good article; it sums up the major issues in a nutshell pretty tidily.
This is interesting:
The Foreign Service classifies language ability into five levels, with “1″ [...]

Burial on the back pages

Mark Noonan at Blogs for Bush:
Methinks the MSM is preparing to bury the story of the Iraq vote in the back pages…
Washington Post, Sunday 16 October 2005, Page A1:

“Sunni Turnout Is High In Vote on Iraqi Charter”
“In a Sunni Quarter, A Day of Emotion”

New York Times, Sunday 16 October 2005, front page:

“Turnout Is Mixed as [...]

Define “proficiency”

How long does it take for an English-speaker to become “proficient” in Mandarin Chinese? An NYT article cites a statistic from the FSI:
Some parents here [in Chicago] worry at first about how relevant the Chinese classes are and whether they will be too difficult. The Foreign Service Institute, which trains American diplomats, ranks Chinese [...]

Action out of the pins

Well, we now know that Harriet Miers is a great bowler who knocks ‘em dead up at Camp David:
“You know, she’s a very gracious and funny person,” said Joshua B. Bolten, the director of the Office of Management and Budget whom Ms. Miers succeeded as deputy White House chief of staff in 2003. “I was [...]
