Wishful thinking
Another foolish person wastes his time and energy:
Make no mistake: Former Vice President Al Gore will be our next president.
I am as confident about that assertion as I am that George W. Bush will go down in history as America’s worst president ever. Gore is the right man at the right time, for many reasons. And it’s clear that the momentum and buzz is shifting his way big time.
…On stage he was graceful, poised and presidential. And it didn’t hurt his hipness quotient any to be getting a little Leo DiCaprio love either. That’s right, Al Gore is suddenly cool.
It gets even better. In October, Gore will also likely be the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for being the planet’s biggest advocate in the fight against climate change. His prestigious nomination in this exclusive club puts him in the company of such independent thinkers, statesmen and activists as Dr. Martin Luther King, President Jimmy Carter, Elie Wiesel and Mother Theresa.
Never mind the fact that within hours of the Academy Awards ceremony, a wingnut hit group (excuse me, I mean “nonpartisan research and educational institute”) put out a smelly and suspicious press release claiming Al Gore “guzzl[es] more than twice the electricity in one month than an average American family uses in an entire year,” which was immediately trumpeted by slimy Drudge and gleefully linked to all over the Internet.
There is only one person the wingnuts hate more than they hate Al Gore, and that’s Bill Clinton. Satan comes in a distant third on their shit list.
And even liberals and Democrats have completely bought into most of the Gore mythology (he ran a terrible campaign in 2000, he doesn’t know who he is, he has problems with the truth, earth tones, Love Story, “invented the Internet,” etc, etc). Quit dreaming and wasting time. Let’s concentrate instead on candidates who are actually going to run for office.

That would be nice if you end up being right on this, Filius. Just think how much better it would be if 2000 would have turned out differently. It’s mind-boggling.
But Filius, I have to bring up something else about you over at LQ. I commented in reply to your comment on the ‘paper tiger’ nonsense, but they ‘moderated’ it and then rejected it altogether. LQ has ALWAYS had problems with people who know the facts, as I’m sure you know by now.
As I said in the comment, I was surprised you gave in so easily on Dank’s assertion that Clinton is to blame for bin Laden looking at the U.S. as ‘paper tiger’ and weak. I expected a better fight than that and figured you must have been in a hurry or completely forgot about bin Laden’s view of Reagan’s fiasco in Beirut.
Anyway, here’s the comment I posted over there in reply to your comment. I think what bin Laden said about Beirut is definitely worth pointing out. Please feel free to delete this entire comment after the first paragraph if you like. Have a good day.
Geez ‘Dump’, or excuse me, Mr. Filius, I’m a little surprised that you gave up that easily. Paper Tiger, oh really?
Two things on that;
1) Osama bin Laden’s first impression of the U.S. military being a ‘paper tiger’, came from 1983 when Ronald Reagan pulled out of Beirut after Hezbollah murdered 241 of our Marines. The source for that was given in an interview by former CIA Agent, Larry C. Johnson, who knows a little bit about bin Laden and terrorism. The interview was done on 9/12/01, the day after 9/11.
Here’s the part that tells what gave bin Laden his initial inspiration.
“We now know, for example, bin Laden was meeting with Imad Mughniyah, Hezbollah security chief. Mughniyah, until yesterday, had killed more Americans than bin Laden, had wounded more Americans than bin Laden. Mughniyah was involved with the bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon, the takeover of TWA 847, and the murder of Navy diver Robert Stethem, the apprehension of several Americans who were held hostage in Beirut, Lebanon.
So this is an individual who has been aggressive in his attacks against America. And we now know through testimony that came out in the trial in New York City on the bombing of the U.S. embassy, that Mughniyah was the mentor, the ideological inspiration, for Osama bin Laden. Bin Laden saw Mughniyah as one who used violence to force the United States to retreat from Lebanon. And he believed that that same model could be used against the United States to force it out of Saudi Arabia and to punish it”.

2) When bin Laden was talking about Somalia, he was insulting our military, not the country’s leadership. In fact here’s the entire quote;
“After leaving Afghanistan, the Muslim fighters headed for Somalia and prepared for a long battle, thinking that the Americans were like the Russians,” bin Laden said. “The youth were surprised at the low morale of the American soldiers and realized more than before that the American soldier was a paper tiger and after a few blows ran in defeat.”.
Now, if you want to blame Clinton for the troops in Mogadishu having ‘low morale’, then that’s one thing. But, you should also remember that Clinton had only been in office 9 months at that time so I’m not sure what effect he had on their morale. Maybe they had ‘low morale’ from the previous 12 years of Reagan and Bush 1?
But regardless, bin Laden was insulting our troops-the same troops who have had his ass pinned down and hiding like a scared little lamb, for the last 5 ½ years.
Filius, in case you want to dismiss any more rumors about Clinton not doing enough to fight terrorism, try here, http://www.snopes.com/rumors/clinton.htm and there are a lot of other sources, too. Did Clinton do enough? I guess not since he didn’t kill bin Laden. But to stick Clinton with being the person who inspired bin Laden, is revisionism at best, and an outright lie when continually repeated.
It’s it funny how they never bring Ronald Reagan up when they accuse some one of ‘not doing enough’ to fight terrorists.
My favorite part about Ronald Reagan and those Hezbollah terrorists that killed our 241 Marines is the fact that he turned around and sold those same terrorists 5,000 TOW and HAWK missiles just 2 years later.
They never write about that here.
The original, ‘paper tiger’? The one thing that really ‘inspired’ bin Laden? That happened 10 years before Mogadishu.
But Rush Limbaugh never tells the kiddies that story.

Hank said he was going to furnish proof that bin Laden said what he said, and he did. That was all I asked him to do. The purpose was not to argue over who’s to blame for 9/11 but simply for Hank to back up his assertion with some documentation.
As for Beirut, you know if you go to LQ and mention Saint Reagan in less-than-glowing terms, there will be trouble. ;-)

I am right on this. My assertion is that any talk of “Gore 2008″ is a silly waste of time, because Al Gore is not running for president. He knows better than to run for president.
The Liberal Left-Wing Media is having fun now with their red-carpet Oscar-night stories of Suddenly-Cool Al Gore kickin’ it with Diddy and Leo DiCaprio, and suddenly pundits are claiming to (belatedly) admire his prescience on Iraq, global warming, etc.
But back in 1999/2000 they were on TV every night claiming Al Gore “would lick the bathroom floor” to be president (yes, Chris Matthews said this more than once), calling Gore “Clinton’s bathtub ring,” and making up stories about him. Back in 1999 these same people were laughing at Earth in the Balance and pointing to it as more evidence of Al Gore’s nerdiness and wackiness (Charts and graphs! Eliminate the internal-combustion engine!).
It was not the Bush campaign, nor the RNC, that did these things, it was the Liberal Left-Wing Media. They created a powerful narrative about Al Gore, which remains in effect to this day.
Now, in 2007, Gore is finally getting some recognition for his prescience on global warming, and rightfully so. But that doesn’t mean the American voter is going to be able to look at him with fresh eyes. When we see Al Gore, we still think Earth Tones and Invented The Internet. A crying shame, yes, but that’s how things are.

I’ve got to hand to you Filius, you have a definite sticktoitiveness about you. When a Clinton-hater says to me that bin Laden got his inspiration from Bill Clinton I feel compelled to correct the record. Bin laden got his initial inspiration from Reagan’s retreat from Beriut. That’s the fact and if you elect to look past it, that’s obviously your choice.

I think Gore entering the race would at least knock Hillary off balance. I’d defintely vote for him over her although neither are my first choice.
My point was mostly that the country would be soaring along right now if the Supreme Court would have selected the winner instead of such a loser.

There are no words any human being could write that would convince Hank Dagny of anything he doesn’t want to believe, anyways. You know that better than I do, since you know him in real life.
