The Secretary of the Army, Francis Harvey, resigned today, as a memo surfaced which revealed that the Army knew five months ago that there were serious problems at Walter Reed Hospital:

[I]n a memo signed by a deputy to Weightman in September 2006, five months before reports of the problems at Walter Reed came to light, concerns were raised about care at the facility after the Army’s decision to privatize support services there.

The memo obtained by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee says Walter Reed “operations and patient care services are at risk of mission failure.”

This is one of those issues that everybody should immediately be able to agree on: Members of our armed forces who get wounded in the line of duty deserve the very best medical care and rehabilitation that money can buy. The sooner things start to improve at Walter Reed, the better. That is a complete no-brainer.
