Make me think (plus: Make me puke)
Gordo, the proprietor of appletree and a frequent contributor to The Liberal Avenger, has, far too kindly, named DPF as one of the “Blogs That Make [Him] Think” (as part of a meme that’s been circulating recently). Gordo is a fantastic blogger and one of the smartest people on my blogroll, and praise from him is quite an honor indeed.
Now it’s up to me to name three blogs that make me think, and (Gordo’s twist on the meme) three blogs that make me puke. Here goes:
Blogs That Make Me Think
- Languagehat. Of the three language-related blogs on my blogroll, Languagehat is the most consistently informative and entertaining.
- Done That (aka 15 Seats). Stram is a hard-working and insightful blogger who writes good stuff, with just the right seasoning of righteous anger and good humor. Done That is an underrated blog.
- The People’s Republic of Seabrook, a longtime ally and comrade of Dum Pendebat Filius. Jack Cluth is the hardest-working blogger out there, and puts out a consistently first-rate blog. Why this man has not yet received a Koufax award is beyond me.
Blogs That Make Me Puke
- The Anti-Idiotarian Rottweiler, possibly the nastiest blog on the Internet. The less said about these people, the better.
- La Shawn Barber’s Corner, the most overrated blog on the Internet. If you’re in the mood to read a stomach-turning combination of wingnut hate speech and unctuous religiosity, La Shawn’s blog is the place you wanna be.
- Blogs For Bush. This blog is actually valuable, because the people who write for it are all perfect exemplars of the twenty-eight-percent George W. Bush diehards. There is a wealth of insight into the wingnut mind here, if you can stomach Mark Noonan’s combination of poorly-written and amazingly mean-spirited anti-Democrat screeds, the monotony of which is occasionally broken by a brief eructation (Eructavit cor meum, as they say) of oozy-goozy Christian piety.

Ha! I didn’t think anyone would actually do the “blogs that make me puke” meme. I’m still working on my own “make me puke” meme. By the way, Creek Running North isn’t really a blog that makes me puke. In fact, Chris Clarke (who also writes at Pandagon) is one of the most thoughtful writers on the Net. I only said that his site makes me puke because I enjoy being a dick.

Isn’t ‘Idiotarian’ one of those wacky wingnut terms—used by maybe two dozen people worldwide—that ESR added to the jargon file after he hijacked it?

I had never heard of an ESR connection with the word idiotarian, but his Wikipedia article suggests you may be right. That’s interesting.

ESR is a colossal masthead.

And here’s the original jargon file from the days when legends like Guy Steele were working on it, and before ESR destroyed it.

Hey thanks for the plug, Filius. You are far too kind.
With all the nice weather I’ve sort of got caught up in daydreaming…lately.
Again thanks, and I agree with you about Gordo and you’re right there with him, my man.

Done That is a very well done blog. Takes alot of time to do that much work on a blog.
Too bad it is dead wrong and hurting the country on 90% of everything on there.
But as far as showing liberals for what they are - it has value.

Where do you get these random percentages from, Hank?
